This moment has been building even before Joey McGuire was the head coach for Texas Tech. In fact, Micah Hudson was offered by the Baylor Bears in 2021 by a recruiting staff that included McGuire, Brian Nance (now Texas Tech’s Director of Player Personnel), and James Blanchard (now Texas Tech’s General Manager). Those relationships established by this current Texas Tech staff paid off with the biggest recruiting fish Texas Tech has ever caught. When Hudson signed his letter of intent on Wednesday, it ushered in a brand-new era of Texas Tech football.

Hudson Signed, Makes Texas Tech History

The five-star wide receiver from Temple, Texas is the first five-star recruit the Red Raiders have ever signed. Back in September, Hudson gave his verbal commitment to Texas Tech. There was concern by much of the fan base that as the season continued to fall well short of preseason expectations Hudson would de-commit. According to the 247 Composite Rankings, Hudson is a top-10 national player (regardless of position). He had offers from essentially any program in the country. However, the relationships established by Nance and Blanchard have been genuine and strong. Hudson has never waivered in his commitment since September. It also doesn’t hurt that Hudson’s father, Desmond Royal, was a defensive lineman for the Red Raiders from 1985 to ’88. As Hudson signed his letter of intent, he became the key piece headlining what appears to be the greatest recruiting class for Texas Tech in the 247 era.

What Does Hudson Bring To The Red Raiders?

Texas Tech had seven wide receivers enter the transfer portal when the season ended. The wide receiver group was the weakest unit on the field for the Red Raiders in 2023. Hudson is expected to play the moment he steps foot on campus for Texas Tech. While he is only listed at 6’0, he has explosive athleticism to play either outside or in the slot. He is a dynamic playmaker in the open field. Expect offensive coordinator Zach Kittley to find ways to get Hudson involved in the offense from day one.
